Why Your Clinic May Not Appear When Patients Ask ChatGPT for a Gangnam Dentist
A patient can ask ChatGPT to recommend a dental clinic in Gangnam instead of beginning with a list of search results. If the answer names a few clinics and yours is absent, it is worth understanding what the patient saw and which sources the answer used.
That does not mean conventional search has ended, or that every patient chooses only from an AI shortlist. It gives the marketing team another route to examine.
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found a 1.2% ChatGPT recommendation rate in its sample of US multi-location businesses. The figure is useful context for how selective a particular test can be. It is not the share of Korean hospitals that ChatGPT recommends.
This article explains the possible gaps to review, with particular attention to dental and plastic surgery clinics. The Korean original was published April 24, 2026; this English edition checks sources as of October 31, 2026.
1. The international benchmark shows a narrower measured recommendation set
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index
SOCi's January 28 announcement covered more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands. Its later public methodology identifies a US sample across five industries and 42 subcategories. For AI testing, it requested ten businesses for an industry and market, counting locations appearing in the first five results as likely recommendations.
| Channel | Reported rate in the study |
|---|---|
| Google local three-pack | 35.9% average appearance rate |
| Gemini | 11.0% recommendation rate |
| Perplexity | 7.4% |
| ChatGPT | 1.2% |
The ratio between 35.9 and 1.2 is approximately 30. SOCi describes AI recommendations as more selective, but that ratio is not a measured probability that a Korean dental clinic faces a task “30 times harder.” The queries, channels and result definitions matter.
Characteristics of the measured businesses
- Locations recommended by ChatGPT averaged 4.3 stars; an average is not a universal minimum.
- Reported profile accuracy was 68.3% for ChatGPT and 68.0% for Perplexity.
- Gemini's 100% accuracy used Google Maps as the reference source, rather than an independent audit of every real-world detail.
- In retail, nine of the top twenty brands appeared on both the traditional-search and AI-visibility lists: 45% overlap.
The practical lesson is to check AI results directly rather than assume they repeat another ranking. The retail overlap does not mean that 55% of Korean clinics have been reclassified or excluded.
What medical citation patterns can and cannot tell us
The original article also cited an 82% healthcare overlap between Perplexity citations and Google results. That detailed comparison was not independently reconstructed for this edition. It should not be combined with SOCi's local-business rates to calculate a Korean clinic's chance of recommendation.
Clinical information from an authoritative medical source and a local clinic recommendation serve different purposes. Naver Place, Modoodoc, Google Business Profile and other platforms may be relevant places to verify a clinic's information, but they are not a confirmed mandatory source sequence used by every AI service.
2. Korean survey data show wider AI use, not a single patient-search journey
Opensurvey's first-half 2026 report compared March and December 2025 samples of 1,000 people each, with nationwide respondents aged from their teens through their fifties. The December survey ran on December 9–10. Its public summary reports the following recent usage figures:
| Channel | Reported usage experience | Reported direction |
|---|---|---|
| Naver | 81.6% | Lower than the earlier comparison |
| YouTube | 72.3% | Lower |
| ChatGPT | 54.5% | Approximately 15 percentage points higher |
| Gemini | 28.9% | Approximately three times the earlier level |
These are usage-experience measures, not mutually exclusive search-market shares, and not a survey limited to clinic patients. On January 7, 2026, OpenAI separately reported that more than 230 million people worldwide ask health or wellness questions on ChatGPT each week. That broader category includes much more than choosing a clinic.
For a Gangnam clinic, start by checking relevant patient questions. The following are useful information areas to review, rather than a verified AI ranking sequence:
- Accurate local listings and relevant directory information.
- The clinic's own service explanations and physician biographies.
- Relevant external information, with its accuracy and relationship to the clinic clear.
- Genuine reviews and consistent practical details, without an invented 4.3-star eligibility rule.
Do not apply 1.2% to a hypothetical 1,000 Gangnam dentists to conclude that only twelve can appear. Neither that population count nor that probability follows from the US study.
3. Medical information needs especially careful evidence and responsibility
Health information and YMYL
Google discusses health topics within its “Your Money or Your Life” quality considerations. That is not a published, identical classification rule for every AI provider.
Ahrefs analyzed 146 million desktop search results from September 2025 and reported AI Overviews for 44.1% of queries in its medical-YMYL category. The study was published November 10, 2025. This measures the selected query set, not the percentage of all Korean patients who see an AI summary.
Information a clinic can make easier to verify
- Accurate addresses, hours and services across relevant profiles.
- Truthful physician credentials and a clear explanation of who wrote or reviewed important clinical information.
- Genuine reviews, assessed without manufacturing a required rating or volume.
- Consistent external references to the correct institution and physicians.
- Content that matches the services actually provided.
- A usable route to the next appropriate inquiry or appointment request.
These help patients evaluate a clinic. They are not a confirmed six-factor AI algorithm, and appointment behavior has not been established here as a ranking input. Comparisons about fees, treatment and risks still require appropriate evidence and clinical assessment.
Medical-advertising requirements also apply
The 2024 ministry monitoring announcement concerned 409 selected advertisements, of which 366 were referred for action, containing 506 potentially unlawful content items. It reported 183 testimonial items, but the printed 31.7% conflicts with the stated denominator. It does not establish that most clinics are breaking the law.
A page written for AI discovery can still be medical advertising. Review its actual content, medium and applicable exceptions. Written consent or a search-friendly format does not automatically authorize a treatment testimonial.
4. Four symptoms worth investigating in your own clinic's data
The following are diagnostic scenarios, not new findings from a survey of Gangnam clinic owners.
1. Impressions remain steady while inquiries fall. Compare search terms, audience, positions, click-through rates and confirmed inquiries. AI summaries may be one hypothesis, alongside tracking errors, competition, demand and the contact experience.
2. A recommendation keyword still ranks but generates fewer patients. Inspect the actual results and subsequent visits. A ranking alone does not establish how many qualified people saw it or contacted the clinic.
3. Competitors appear in relevant AI answers. Save the question, response, cited sources and conditions. Repeat the check before concluding that the pattern is stable, and measure inquiries separately.
4. The same advertising spend brings fewer new patients. Review costs, conversion definitions and the complete appointment journey. Even a hypothetical halving of acquisition at a fixed spend would not, on its own, prove AI search caused it.
5. Five useful areas for an AEO review
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, aims to make accurate information easier to discover and use in answers. It complements the work of making a site useful and accessible through search.
| Area | What to review | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Local information | Relevant profiles agree on actual services and contact details. | Correct discrepancies; do not assume one conflict triggers automatic exclusion. |
| Reviews | Genuine experience, appropriate handling and current information. | A 4.3-star study average is not a provider eligibility threshold. |
| Identity and responsibility | Clinic and physician names, credentials and authorship are verifiable. | Make the correct institution easy to identify without inventing endorsements. |
| Supported clinical explanations | Relevant evidence, actual procedures and properly defined data. | The GEO research reported improvements up to 40% in its experimental setting, not a guaranteed clinic citation uplift from internal statistics. |
| Advertising review | Claims, testimonials, medium and any required approval. | Compliance matters in its own right; no automatic AI ranking penalty has been established here. |
Use these areas to find practical gaps. They are not five mandatory gates whose combined score determines inclusion.
6. Five checks to begin with
Record what you have confirmed and what still needs attention. A simple checklist score is a working aid, not an AI eligibility test.
- Check relevant questions about the clinic's actual services, recording service, model where available, language, location, date and repeated responses.
- Compare address, telephone, hours and service information across the website and relevant listings.
- Review genuine recent feedback and whether information remains current, without requiring 4.3 stars or a new review every thirty days.
- Check that physician biographies and applicable credentials are accurate and accessible; publish identifiers only where appropriate.
- Review treatment explanations and any internal figures for evidence, definitions, clinical responsibility and advertising requirements.
7. Investigate your actual visibility instead of chasing a universal 1.2% slot
The benchmark gives a reason to examine AI discovery alongside existing channels. It does not prove that conventional advertising has stopped working or that a clinic missing from one answer cannot succeed.
Start with a small, documented review:
This week, choose three relevant questions about the clinic's priority services. Check the available ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI search experiences, record what appears and which sources support it, and repeat under documented conditions.
Review the information gaps before deciding whether to change content or advertising spend. Connect any changes to real visits and inquiries; an AI mention and a new patient are different outcomes.
