Statistics reference date and Korean article update: October 28, 2026. The original Korean article was first published May 7, 2026. This English edition was prepared October 31, 2026.

The latest period covered here is September 2026, using the Korea Tourism Organization's October 28 release. March and first-quarter figures remain below as historical comparisons.

Inbound visitor figures are relevant to more than the tourism news cycle.

The number of arrivals, source markets and regional travel patterns can help a business decide which customers to prepare for and what information they will need.

That can matter to beauty, healthcare, retail, accommodation, experiences, exhibitions, performances, local brands, pop-ups and organizations managing commercial or visitor areas.

More arrivals can mean a wider range of search languages, map services, reviews and booking or payment expectations. The actual implications depend on the business and its customers.

We will use the figures to explain what a business should check when preparing for international customers.

Statistics update: October 28, 2026

KTO's release reported 17,110,477 inbound visitor arrivals in January–September 2026, up 21.5% year on year. September alone recorded 2,062,042, up 21.1%. These are inbound-arrival statistics, not a count of unique people visiting individual businesses, and the September figures may be revised. See the KTO September release (Korean).

The ministry's October 22 tourism update reported KRW 15.9416 trillion in tourism-sector spending recorded through cards for January–September, up 47.7% year on year. This is a card-spending measure, not all payment methods or evidence that every business's revenue rose. See the ministry's January–September update (Korean).

The March, first-quarter and 2024 medical figures below refer to their own periods. Read them separately from the January–September update.

March 2026 recorded more than 2.04 million arrivals

KTO's March statistics, released April 30, 2026, give a total of 2,045,992 inbound visitors for the month.

That was 26.7% above March 2025's 1,614,596 and 33.2% above March 2019's 1,535,641.

The first-quarter comparison also showed growth.

January–March 2026 totaled 4,743,122, compared with 3,870,247 in the same period of 2025, an increase of 22.6%.

The annual figures help put that growth in context.

Korea recorded 17,502,756 inbound visitors in 2019, 16,369,629 in 2024 and 18,936,562 in 2025. The 2025 total exceeded the pre-pandemic 2019 figure.

These observations show growth beyond the earlier recovery period. They do not, by themselves, predict future arrivals or demand for a particular store.

Check the release date and definition

The ministry's April 16 announcement described first-quarter arrivals as more than 4.76 million and March arrivals as around 2.06 million.

The later KTO workbook released April 30 gives 4,743,122 for the first quarter and 2,045,992 for March.

We retain both dated references rather than silently treating the earlier announcement and later workbook as identical. The detailed March and first-quarter counts in this article use the April 30 KTO release.

China, Japan and Taiwan were important first-quarter source markets

The first-quarter KTO figures include:

  • China: 1,424,326 arrivals.
  • Japan: 939,975.
  • Taiwan: 542,670.

For March alone, the counts were China 501,060, Japan 481,789 and Taiwan 192,138. Other examples were Vietnam 74,859, the Philippines 70,120 and Hong Kong 59,364.

Use those figures as a starting point for choosing the audience your business can serve.

Customers may differ in preferred language, platforms and the information they use to compare a business. Nationality does not determine every individual's behavior. Use the source-market figures alongside your own location, services, inquiries and actual customer needs.

International marketing involves choosing whom you want to serve and making accurate information available where those customers research, compare and plan a visit.

Look beyond Seoul

Regional travel indicators are another part of the picture.

The ministry's April first-quarter announcement reported a 49.7% year-on-year rise in arrivals through regional airports. It also reported a regional-visit rate of 34.5%, up 3.2 percentage points, using the measure in that release.

The same announcement reported 338 cruise-ship calls at major ports including Jeju, Busan and Incheon, up 52.9% year on year.

These indicators are useful starting points for a regional business.

Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam and Seongsu are familiar examples of visitor-facing districts, but airport and port activity also gives businesses elsewhere a reason to assess the opportunity.

Check how visitors move through the actual area and whether they need your service. National arrivals or a regional airport's growth do not establish footfall on a particular street.

Read spending measures alongside arrival counts

A business may not feel an increase in arrivals if that demand does not lead to relevant purchases.

In its first-quarter announcement, the ministry reported a 23.0% year-on-year rise in foreign card spending and overall trip satisfaction of 90.8 points. These are separate measures, not a conversion rate or a measure of an individual business's performance.

More visitors do not automatically create sales for every industry. Customers may struggle to find the business, understand its offer, assess its reviews or complete a booking or payment.

For an owner, the next question is practical: can the intended customer find useful information, understand it and work out how to visit or contact you?

The 2024 medical-tourism figures show a separate sector trend

The general tourism figures cover a different population from international-patient statistics. The latter provide historical context for healthcare and related services.

The health ministry reported approximately 1.17 million international patients in 2024, up 93.2% from roughly 610,000 in 2023. At the time of the 2025 announcement, that was the largest annual total since the attraction program began in 2009. It is a 2024 result, not the latest annual patient figure for this English edition.

Dermatology recorded approximately 705,000 department-level patients and a 56.6% share, followed by plastic surgery at 11.4%, the report's combined internal-medicine category at 10.0% and screening centers at 4.5%. A patient visiting several departments is counted in each, so these shares should not be applied directly to a nationally unique visitor total.

International visitors may need services as well as places to see.

Visitors may research products, experiences, beauty services or medical care, as well as accommodation and places to eat. Each service still needs its own evidence, operating preparation and applicable requirements.

That is why international marketing can be relevant to clinics, skincare businesses, cosmetics brands, shops, showrooms, pop-ups, accommodation and experience-based local businesses. The appropriate approach depends on what each actually offers.

Why a business can stay quiet while arrivals rise

When the business is not seeing the expected interest, we suggest checking four possible gaps.

First, the information may be missing from the channels the customer uses.

Depending on the audience, these may include Google Search, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Instagram, TikTok, travel platforms, blogs or communities. Information available only on Naver may not reach a customer using another service.

Second, the information may be difficult to understand.

A visitor may need the business name, address, hours, booking steps, price range, payment options, applicable tax-refund information, waiting arrangements and relevant precautions in a language they can use.

Third, the available reviews may not answer the customer's questions.

Reviews can help people assess an unfamiliar business. Language may affect how accessible they are, but a large number of reviews alone does not guarantee trust or a booking. Invite genuine feedback without incentives or selective requests for positive reviews.

Fourth, the steps before and after a visit may not connect well.

A customer may find the business but struggle with an inaccurate map pin, an unclear reservation process or payment instructions. Afterward, make it easy to ask a question or share voluntary feedback.

Review search information, maps, language support, reviews, booking and payment together. Advertising is one possible part of that work.

What to check first

Start with the information a prospective customer needs:

  • Are the Maps and Business Profile details accurate?
  • Is the essential information available in the priority languages for the intended audience?
  • Is there a useful page explaining how to visit?
  • Are booking, payment, eligible tax-refund arrangements, waiting and hours clear?
  • Can actual customers leave honest feedback voluntarily?
  • Does the content answer relevant questions customers use when researching the service?
  • Do updates reflect relevant seasons, events, flights, cruise activity or local festivals?

Publishing a translation is one step in that preparation.

Consider what the customer needs before traveling, after arrival, while searching nearby, when comparing options, during booking and after the visit.

Why international marketing matters in 2026

The figures show growth over the periods described.

The 2025 annual total exceeded 2019, and the later-released first-quarter 2026 count was 22.6% above the previous year. March alone exceeded 2.04 million. The October 28 update extends the picture to 17.11 million arrivals through September.

The opportunity still varies between businesses.

Customers need information they can understand, an accurate location, useful evidence about the business and workable booking or payment steps.

Move from the headline growth figure to questions about your own customer experience:

Can the intended visitor find us?

Can they understand what we offer?

Can they assess the information and work out how to visit or contact us?

Answering those questions is how a business can prepare to compete for relevant demand. National growth creates a reason to act; it does not guarantee individual revenue.
