Planning Organic Search Marketing: How to Set a Budget and Scope

If you want to ease the pressure of advertising costs, start preparing for search traffic alongside your current marketing. Separate the changes your website needs from the new information customers need, then choose a scope you can manage while continuing to bring in the enquiries you need today.

Advertising spend appears clearly in the monthly accounts. When the bill becomes difficult to justify, the first question is often how much to cut. A page that already brings in enquiries through search gives you more room to decide: customers still have somewhere to learn about your service while you adjust the advertising budget.

Creating and maintaining that page also takes time and money. At BlinkAd, we suggest starting with two questions: which customer enquiries do you want more of, and how much can you prepare on your existing website?

Plan the advertising adjustment and the search preparation together

You still need enquiries while you prepare for organic search. If advertising is helping customers contact you and buy, establish what it contributes before setting aside a separate budget for SEO work.

Google distinguishes paid advertising from inclusion and rankings in organic search results. Consider the contribution of each separately: paying for ads, and preparing a website customers can find through search. Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO

The time it takes website changes to appear in search results varies by the work and the site. Google also explains that changes take different amounts of time and do not always produce a noticeable effect. Rather than assuming organic traffic will immediately replace the advertising you cut this month, budget for the preparation and allow time to assess the results. Google’s SEO Starter Guide

Clarify the enquiries you want and the value of a customer

More website visitors may be disappointing if they only ask about services your company cannot provide. By contrast, even a small audience gives you a reason to explain a topic further when people enquire about work you want to take on.

For example, if you offer a custom production service, someone reading your company introduction may need different information from someone checking the scope, delivery time and quotation requirements. Knowing which enquiries you want helps you choose the first page to improve.

When considering the budget, distinguish what a customer pays from what remains after you deliver the service. Start with the additional sales revenue and subtract costs that arise because of that sale, such as materials and sales commissions. Include any extra labour required as the workload increases.

This gives you a rough sense of how many additional purchases would be needed to cover content and running costs. Overall profitability, including fixed costs and taxes, is a separate calculation. If you factor in repeat purchases, use purchase records you have actually confirmed.

Break an organic search marketing quote down by task

Two proposals may both be called SEO quotes, yet cover different work because the websites and information gaps differ. Breaking the costs into the following types makes it easier to decide what to do first.

Cost itemWhat the work involvesWhat to check when budgeting
Initial reviewReview the pages people can find through search and identify missing explanations. What will be reviewed and what recommendations will you receive?
Page changes and developmentPublish the necessary information and connect relevant pages and contact options. What can be changed on the existing site, and what requires additional work?
Content productionUse evidence to answer the questions customers ask before choosing.Which topics, drafts and supporting materials are needed, and in which languages?
Ongoing workUpdate changing information and improve pages using search traffic and real enquiries.Which tasks are recurring, and which arise when information changes?

Even if you need all these items, they need not all start at the same scale. Adding an explanation to an existing service page takes different resources from building a new foreign-language page.

Google lists site structure reviews, technical advice, content development and keyword research as examples of SEO services. Compare quotes around the work your website actually needs, rather than a single line saying “SEO included.” Google’s examples of SEO services

Start with what your current website can support

There may be work you can start without rebuilding the website. The key question is whether you can publish and revise the information customers need now.

Your current situationWhat to prepare first
You can edit the site, but service information is incomplete.Improve the pages related to the enquiries you want to receive.
The explanations exist, but pages are hard to find in search or poorly connected.Check whether search services can read the pages and whether relevant information is linked.
You want international customers, but have no information in their language.Prepare the necessary explanations for the service and languages your team can actually support.
Adding or editing pages is difficult.Confirm the options with the current developer, then compare additional development with a rebuild.

You can then start with a manageable amount of work and makes it easier to identify the work to outsource and the information your company needs to provide.

Separate completed work from the customer response

Once work begins, review what has been published alongside the response from customers. Publishing pages and providing the necessary explanations are the initial tasks. Whether people arriving through search actually enquire is something to assess afterwards.

Look at the questions people search for, the pages they read before contacting you, and whether the enquiries received match the business you wanted. Distinguish clicks on an enquiry button from enquiries successfully received. This helps you decide whether to write something new or improve an existing explanation.

Agree at the outset when to review the results and what records you will need. Even if nothing changes, this makes it easier to discuss whether the issue lies in data collection, the explanation on the page, or the customer response.

At BlinkAd, you can discuss topic planning around customer questions, content writing, links between relevant pages and ongoing work after publication. Our brand blog service overview explains the scope in more detail.

If you are unsure where to start, share your website address, whether you currently run ads, and the enquiries you want more of. We can look together at the work to commission and the information your company needs to prepare.
